Abstract

The article studies the role of memory in Bernhard Schlink’s novel «Homecoming» as an important tool in the formation of identity and understanding of Germany’s post-war past. It examines how personal and collective memories help characters get closer to their roots, find their place in history, and gain a sense of belonging. Special attention is paid to the myth of Odysseus, which serves as a metaphor for the long journey back to himself and his past. The topic of trauma and different attitudes towards traumatic memories is also becoming relevant.
